Saving Money in Finland, Episode 1:€0.63 Basic & Quick Meat Sauce & Myths About "Cheap" Foods

Makes 4 to 6 servings. Prices based on Citymarket Puuvilla.
1 x 400g macaroni - €0.19
1 x 400-500g ground meat(Can be beef/pork or just beef) - €2-2.57
1 x onion - €0.17
1 x 500g crushed tomatoes - €0.71
Olive oil/Butter
Salt
Pepper

Chop the onion, and add it to a pan over medium heat with oil or butter. Saute for 4 to 5 minutes, then add the meat. Break up the meat and stir for about 5 minutes. At this point, bring a pot of water to a boil, and add salt and macaroni. Add tomatoes to meat, and season with salt, pepper, and whatever other spices you want*. After about 6 to 8 minutes, drain the macaroni. To serve, put the macaroni on a plate with the meat sauce on top.

* - The best thing about this particular recipe is that one can do almost anything with this sauce. In my video, I used basil, oregano, and garlic powder to give it an "Italian" flair. By adding cumin, cayenne pepper, and chili powder, suddenly it's more South America. Add Worcester sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder, and you've got a sloppy Joe sauce. Or, just add extra salt and pepper and enjoy it on its own.

Another point that I forgot to make in the video was that this pasta and sauce recipe is more filling and more affordable than the "pata" bags found in shops, as well as most of the "just add water" sauce bags. This is also healthier(well, as healthy as a meal with red meat can be, I mean).

Enjoy!

Hello, My name is Marco and I'm from Italy. I have some eyes problems (early cataract and glaucoma) and I found you Youtube chanel searching infos about low vision. I have to tell you that I admire you very much for your capability to do so many things in your home even if you have very serious low vision problems. Seeing you chopping onion, knowing that you actually see very few, tell s me that I must not give up and that I can do many many things anyway (my eye problems are much more small than yours).
I like also the idea of sharing ideas on cooking and on How to Save money. Your meat sauce looks very good, and it's very similar to What me and my wife do in our kitchen. If we cook the sauce for a long time we call it "ragù bolognese", it's a very typical Italian dish and it's perfect with maccheroni or, better, tagliatelle. For better results, you could add some cutted carrots and celery to the onion, and, before adding tomatoes to the meal, use sone white wine to give IT a bit more flavour. You can also add some conserved tomatoe concentrate to the sauce to give more taste.
One thing: I'm very surprised for the cost of maccheroni in Finland: they are really very cheap! Here in Italy 1 kg of pasta costs from 1 to 3 euros, depending on the brand. Also the meat looks quite Inexpensive there. IT looks like a good place to live...

Thank you for your recinse, and please go on with your post, I will be happy to read them.

... And sorry for all the mistakes: my autocorrector seems to not understand english and tries to correct words in Italian... And I always notice the errors when I've already published the text! :)
